About AF Stat™

The foundation of the initiative is the AF Stat™ working group, which convened for the first time on May 18, 2009. Representatives from 24 different organizations met to finalize the AF Stat Call to Action based on input from all organizations that helped to outline the priority actions needed to elevate AFib on the national healthcare agenda and improve patient care. The working group then spent time exploring ways each individual organization would work to fulfill the AF Stat Call to Action.

Guiding the AF Stat efforts are Medical Chair, Dr. Eric N. Prystowsky, the Health Policy Advisor Senator Bill Frist, MD, and Public Health Advisor, the National Forum for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention.

Jerry West, Patient Advocate

Jerry West, 14-time All Star basketball player and former General Manager of the LA Lakers has been battling atrial fibrillation (AFib) for over 30 years and is keenly aware of what it means to live with this debilitating disease.

"I'd never even heard of AFib," says Mr. West, "And I've always had access to the very best medical care. It's like this condition was some sort of hidden secret that people either didn't understand or didn't discuss. Meanwhile, I was walking around feeling like there was a ticking time bomb in my chest." Read full patient profile

National Forum for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention, AF Stat Public Health Advisor

The National Forum for Heart Disease & Stroke Prevention is AF Stat's public health advisor, helping AF Stat reach out to public health organizations and stakeholders. The National Forum itself is made up of more than 80 organizations that collaborate to provide national leadership for those committed to building a heart healthy and stroke free society. In 2001, the American Heart Association, the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention founded the National Forum to provide leadership for implementation of A Public Health Action Plan to Prevent Heart Disease and Stroke, a national plan to chart a course for the prevention of heart disease and stroke.
